Here was a very good thought on "calling" by John Ortberg.
"A calling is very different than a quest for fulfillment. A calling, though we glamorize it, is not glamorous. It is a response to a summons. It is a kind of surrender. It is a willingness to die to the past and move to the future. C.S. Lewis wrote, "To follow the vocation does not mean happiness, but once it has been heard, there is no happiness for those who do not follow."

While he can be extremely vulgar, he is also extraordinarily insightful about the culture. I've been wanting to read something by Klosterman for sometime. I'm glad I finally did. Next I want to read his Fargo Rock City.
Ron A. Carucci: Leadership Divided: What Emerging Leaders Need and What You Might Be Missing
I read this two years ago when it first came out and did a reread this past week. This is one of the core books for the course I teach - Emerging Paradigms of Leadership. Good book to help bridge the "divide" between established boomer leaders and emerging leaders.
Howard Behar: It's Not About the Coffee: Leadership Principles from a Life at Starbucks
A very nice book on people leadership. This is one of those books you should read just to remind you of all the things you know but forget, all the things you believe but ignore and all the ways you should lead but neglect. Read this and be reminded of a center that will sustain good leadership.
David Kinnaman: unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity... and Why It Matters
Been wanting to read this for awhile. Just a few chapters into it. Good book for understanding where the unChristian culture is and how it views Christianity.
Ruth Haley Barton: Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership: Seeking God in the Crucible of Ministry
This is the ONE MUST READ book for anyone who is a leader and wants to attend to their spiritual life (which should be all leaders!). And it is a vital read for anyone who mentors leaders. Barton is one of the best spiritual directors today and her heart is to do spiritual formation work with leaders. This is like having Barton as a mentor. The last chapter alone is worth the price of the book.
Brian McLaren: Finding Our Way Again: The Return of the Ancient Practices
I liked it, but wasn't "wowed" by it. Still, worth reading.
Mark Sayers: The Trouble With Paris: Following Jesus in a World of Plastic Promises
This is a GREAT book. One of my favorites for 2008. I think his cultural analysis is brilliant. I think he sees some things that a number of emergent authors miss and gets some things right that I think some PoMos are confused on. This is the kind of "discerning the times" books leaders MUST READ. Thanks to my friend Byron of Hearts and Minds for pointing it out to me. (*****)
Ravi Zacharias: The Lotus and the Cross: Jesus Talks with Buddha
A book published in 2001. I pulled it off the shelf for a friend and did a reread. A short read, you can do it in one sitting. Zacharias (an Indian) is considerate but daring as he uses a conversation between Jesus and the Buddha to illumine the vital differences between the two.
Robert Benson: In Constant Prayer (The Ancient Practices)
One of the first books in a new series by Thomas Nelson. A look at the "practice of hours" or saying prayers at regular times each day. It makes me want to try this practice for awhile and see what the experience is like.
Dan Roam: The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures
Another fun and useful book. Good on problem solving, creativity and imagination.
