When the Old Normal is no Longer "Good Enough"
After a few years of better eating and vigorour exercise I have sustained my weight at about 200, with a "reasonable" body fat count. I have stayed at that new normal of 200, fluctuating up and down just a few pounds for at least a year now, may be longer.
Recently I decided that the 200 pounds was not where I wanted to be. In fact, I wanted to have a body fat percentage that was in the "fit" range. That range is 14-17% body fat. When you drop below 14% you move into the realm of "athletic." By the way, here is an EXCELLENT article on body fat and percentages and what they mean for men and women. However, at my age - 56 - the allowed body fat percentage changes. And if I move to the 14-17% range, I am considered "athletic" for my age group!
Anyway . . . all this is an illustration about a NEW NORMAL that I am seeking.
Right now, I am settled into a NORMAL at 200 pounds and about 20% body fat. I want a new normal of 185-190 pounds and 15-16% body fat.
At one time I never thought I would be able to hit and sustain the NORMAL I now enjoy. I found myself thinking - I don't have to settle for my current NORMAL. A New Normal is possible.
As a spiritual director and leadership coach, I am constantly inviting people to consider - what is the New Normal they desire? Even better - what is the New Normal Christ desires for them.
That is a great question to ask today. What is the New Normal you desire for your devotional life, for your prayer intimacy with Jesus, for your missional fruitfulness on behalf of His Kingdom, for __________ (fill in the blank).
What do you desire?
What is your plan?
What are you waiting for?
A New Normal is waiting for you.
p.s. Sometimes the New Normal is not a Good Normal. It should be both New and Good.
