On Tuesday afternoon when I was teaching at ACCS, we were having an intense interaction about servant leadership. The students (most of them pastors, missionaries, or educators) were really into the discussion.
Now, if you have been in India for any travels and have been around Indian Christians, you know they have a wonderful gift of service. I am sometimes embarrassed at how ready they are to serve me in any way they can when I visit India!
One student was emphatic when he said that followers of Christ serve wonderfully and sacrificially. But leaders do not serve their followers. Leaders are to be served by their followers! Well, I have to give him an A+ for honesty. He said very boldly what most of us probably think quietly.
I asked him - "So you are saying that in India leaders would not do menial, lowly tasks that the servants do?"
He answered - "No." "Leaders are too busy and important to do that. It would be a waste of time for leaders to do things like that which can and should be done by those lower in the organization." (Note - this is somewhat paraphrased but accurately expresses his thoughts.)
I asked another question, "So leaders would not do things like sweep floors, clean toilets, or wash dirty feet?"
"No" came the quick reply!
Silence in the room as the students realized what had been said. Uncomfortable silence lingered.
In the back of the room another hand shot up. "Yes," I asked.
"Ghandi cleaned toilets. Mother Teresa washed feet. They were true servant leaders who gained great love and respect of millions. We should be like them. That is the true Gospel."
I turned to John 13 and read these words from Jesus:
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you . . . Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
